Frequently Asked Questions
If you cannot find the answer to your question below, please email me your question at: lee@masonleather.com
What do your cuffs fit?
Mason Leather cuffs are universal fit for all standard, adult sized, straight comb butt stocks. This encompasses the overwhelming majority on the market, past and present.
Mason Leather cuffs DO NOT FIT Monte Carlo stocks, stocks with cheek swells or youth length stocks. They may or may not fit various MILSURP stocks, I make no guarantees regarding fit on MILSURP stocks.
Will the eyelets and rivets on the Cartridge Cuffs damage my stock?
Nope! The rivets and eyelets I use are smooth on the backside, made from pure brass and inset slightly into the leather. I have taken one of my Cuffs and rubbed it vigorously all over a stock with absolutely zero affect to the stock. Also, in over 10 years of making Cartridge Cuffs and thousands of customers served, I have never gotten a single complaint of a stock being affected in any way by the Cartridge Cuffs.
Will the leather discolor my stock?
Nope! Again, in over 10 years of making Cartridge Cuffs and thousands of customers served, I have never seen a single instance of a stock becoming discolored or affected in any way.
Why isn't there a 'Coal' color sling option?
The leather I use for slings is completely different from the leather I use for Cartridge Cuffs. It is a latigo leather (incredible for straps, belts, slings, etc) and is dyed at the tannery. The tannery does not offer a 'coal' color. Luckily, the Brown, Mahogany & Black colors the slings come in are almost identical to the Cartridge Cuff colors I dye myself. I recommend pairing a Coal Cartridge Cuff with a Black sling, they look very good together!
How should I care for my new leather?
I recommend once or twice a year rubbing your leather down with a light coat of Fiebing's mink oil paste. A piece cut from an old cotton sock works very well for applying the paste onto the leather. DO NOT USE AUTOMOTIVE LEATHER PRODUCTS ON YOUR MASON LEATHER GEAR. Please see full use and care instructions at the bottom of the page.
What is the white residue in the stamping on my Cartridge Cuff?
This is dried mink oil paste, the finish I use on the leather. During the finish process I apply melted mink oil paste that helps protect the dye and leather. After it dries I apply heat to let it soak in more, then buff off the excess. During final assembly I get as much dried mink oil paste out of the letter stamping grooves as I can, then apply heat one more time to melt off any excess. Occasionally a little remains in the stamping grooves, it is harmless and can be carefully scraped out with a toothpick.Â
Do you accept custom commission orders?
My production items have many custom options including name, initial or caliber stamping. In order to serve all customers better, I do not accept custom orders beyond what is available on my website.
How did you get into leather work?
In 2010 I bought a small pocketknife that did not have a sheath, but I wanted to be able to carry it on my belt. I went to a local crafts store and picked up some leather and basic tools. I made a little snap-close belt case for that knife that I still have today, and the rest is history!
How many people work in your shop, and do you do this full-time?
Just me! And yes, I am happy to say that as of June 2022 Mason Leather is my full time gig! To be fair, Mason Leather has been a full-time job for several years prior to 2022, I just wasn't ready to leave my "day job" yet.
What did you do before going full-time at Mason Leather?
Prior to June 2022 I worked as a Program Analyst in the defense industry supporting Air Force Special Operations programs for 5 years (2017-2022).
Before that I worked as a Financial Analyst for a small telecom company for 18 months (2015-2017) and from 2011-2015 I attended the University of Texas at Dallas where I earned degrees in Finance & Accounting. While in school I worked as a mover (the guys that load/unload your stuff when you move) and a student personal finance coach as well as doing leather work on the side.
Prior to attending UTD, I worked in an Amazon warehouse for about 9 months.
And way back in the day, I was an infantryman in the US Army on active duty from 2006-2010. I deployed to RC South, Afghanistan with the 1st Infantry Division in 2008-2009 where my unit built FOB Ramrod and conducted combat patrols throughout Maywand, Zhari and Panjwai districts.Â
Where do you source your supplies and how do you maintain high quality control?
For leather I work exclusively with Weaver Leather. The quality of their leather is second to none and that helps me make sure you get the best end-product possible. I source hardware from a few places, primarily Buckle Guy. The quality control is exceptional. Being a one-person shop I am able to maintain high quality control throughout the entire process.
Can I get more than 5 cartridge loops on rifle cuffs?
Short answer: No.
In the distant past I offered 5, 6 & 7 loop options for rifle cuffs. After several years it became apparent the 5 loop option was by far the most popular and arguably looked the best, so to streamline production efficiency I eliminated the 6 & 7 loop options.
